Latch Talk

Latch Talk lets you lock your microphone open by double-tapping the PTT button, so you can talk hands-free without holding the button down. Tap once to unlatch and stop transmitting.

How It Works

1

Double-Tap PTT

Quickly double-tap the PTT button. The button turns amber with a pulsing animation to indicate your mic is latched open.

2

Talk Freely

Your microphone stays open — no need to hold the button. Speak naturally while your hands are busy.

3

Tap Once to Unlatch

When you’re done, tap the PTT button once. The button returns to its normal state and transmission stops.

Use Cases

Latch Talk is ideal when you need to talk for an extended period without holding the button:

  • Camera operators — Both hands on the camera while calling shots
  • Grip and electric crews — Hands occupied with equipment
  • Giving directions — Extended instructions to the crew
  • Anyone wearing gloves — Touchscreens are hard to use with work gloves

Auto-Unlatch

Your mic automatically unlatches in these situations to prevent accidental open-mic broadcasting:

  • Incoming Whisper or Live-Sight call — Latch is released when a call comes in
  • Audio relay disconnects — If you lose connection, the latch is released
  • Admin revokes access — If an admin disables your Latch Talk permission mid-use
💡 Tip

Latch Talk also works with Bluetooth headset buttons and the Wear OS smartwatch — double-tap those buttons to latch, single tap to unlatch.

Admin Controls

Hub admins and owners can enable or disable Latch Talk on a per-member basis:

  • Open the Members Drawer on the PTT screen
  • Tap a member to open their Action Sheet
  • Toggle Latch Talk on or off for that member

When disabled for a member, double-tapping the PTT button has no special effect — it behaves like a normal press-and-hold.

📝 Note

Latch Talk is a premium feature available on paid plans. On the free tier, double-tapping the PTT button has no latch effect.

Frequently Asked Questions

VOX (voice-activated) automatically transmits when it detects sound, which can be triggered by background noise. Latch Talk is user-initiated — you deliberately double-tap to start, so there’s no risk of accidental transmission from ambient noise.
Yes. A single press-and-hold still works as normal PTT. Only a quick double-tap activates the latch. You can freely switch between both methods.
Other members see you as “Transmitting” in the members drawer, just like a normal transmission. The amber latch indicator is only visible on your own device.
