Navigating the App

CrewTalk is built around three main tabs, with drawers and overlays for additional functionality. Here’s a complete guide to finding your way around.

The Three Tabs

Once you enter a hub, you’ll see three tabs at the bottom of the screen:

PTT Tab (Push-to-Talk)

Your primary screen. This is where you:

  • Talk using the large PTT button
  • See who’s online in the members drawer
  • Switch channels using the channel selector or channel dial
  • Monitor additional channels
  • Start calls via member action sheet (Whisper or Live-Sight)

Messages Tab

Your text communication hub:

  • Channel messages — Each of the 10 channels has its own message thread
  • Direct messages — Private 1-on-1 conversations with team members
  • Image sharing — Send photos from camera or gallery
  • Unread badges — Per-channel unread counts on each tab

Settings Tab

Your personal and hub configuration:

  • Edit Profile — Change display name and avatar
  • Audio Settings — Waveform style, walkie-talkie sounds, noise gate
  • Bluetooth PTT — Enable/disable headset button control
  • Listen Only Mode — Receive audio without the ability to transmit
  • Account — Sign out, delete account

Drawers

Drawers slide in from the side of the PTT screen:

Members Drawer

Tap the people icon to see everyone in the hub. Members are grouped by status:

  • Transmitting — Currently speaking (with channel indicator)
  • Online — Connected and available
  • Away — App is backgrounded
  • In Call — On a Whisper or Live-Sight call
  • Offline — Not connected (shows “last seen” time)

Each member row shows quick-action icons for messaging, calling, and video.

Hub Settings Drawer

Tap the gear icon for hub configuration (admin/owner only):

  • Channel names
  • Hub description
  • Invite code management

Monitoring Drawer

Tap the headphones icon to manage channel monitoring:

  • Toggle up to 5 additional channels to listen to simultaneously
  • Monitored channels play audio alongside your active channel

The Channel Dial

The channel dial is a unique feature for quickly switching channels:

1

Long-Press the Channel Selector

Press and hold the channel selector button (shows current channel name) for 300ms.

2

Drag to Select

A circular dial appears with all 10 channels arranged in a circle. Drag up/down to rotate through channels.

3

Release to Confirm

Release your finger to switch to the highlighted channel. You’ll feel a haptic tap as you pass each channel.

💡 Quick Channel Switch

For a simple tap (no long-press), the channel selector opens a grid modal showing all 10 channels. Tap any channel to switch instantly.

Overlays

Some features appear as overlays on top of the current screen:

  • Active Call Overlay — Shows during Whisper calls (minimized bar or expanded card)
  • Live-Sight Overlay — Full-screen video during Live-Sight calls with draggable PiP
  • Tally Light Overlay — Recording indicator when connected to a video switcher
  • Email Verification Banner — Reminder to verify your email (dismissible)

Status Row

Below the channel selector on the PTT screen, you’ll see a status row showing:

  • Connection quality — Good (green), Fair (yellow), or Poor (red) based on ping latency
  • Bluetooth status — Shows connected device name when BT PTT is active
  • Hub name — The current hub you’re connected to

Navigation Tips

  • Unread badge on the Messages tab shows total unread count across all channels
  • Back gesture from the PTT screen prompts you to confirm before leaving the hub
  • Waveform visualizer appears above the PTT button when someone is transmitting (or when you’re transmitting), showing the active speaker’s name

Frequently Asked Questions

Tap the back arrow or use your device’s back gesture from the PTT screen. You’ll see a confirmation dialog before leaving the current hub, then return to the Hub Selector.
The badge shows the total number of unread messages across all channels and DM conversations in the current hub.
The tab order is fixed: PTT, Messages, Settings. This ensures a consistent experience across all devices and crew members.
