Noise Gate

The noise gate helps keep your PTT transmissions clean by filtering out low-level background noise. When enabled, quiet ambient sounds (fans, distant traffic, set hum) are suppressed while your voice comes through clearly.

How It Works

The noise gate monitors the audio input level during PTT transmission:

  1. Below threshold — Audio is muted (gate is "closed")
  2. Above threshold — Audio passes through (gate is "open")
  3. Threshold adapts — The gate adjusts automatically based on ambient noise levels

This means background noise is suppressed during pauses in your speech, resulting in cleaner transmissions for your team.

Enabling the Noise Gate

1

Open Settings

Go to the Settings tab.

2

Find Audio Section

Scroll to the Audio section.

3

Toggle Auto Noise Gate

Enable Auto Noise Gate. The feature activates immediately.

When to Use It

Enable the noise gate when:

  • You're on a noisy set with generators, traffic, or equipment
  • Wind noise is an issue (outdoor shooting)
  • You're in a room with HVAC or fan noise
  • Background chatter from bystanders is distracting

Disable the noise gate when:

  • You're in a quiet environment
  • You need to transmit ambient sounds intentionally
  • You notice your voice getting cut off (the gate is too aggressive for your environment)
💡 Best Results

The noise gate works best with a headset microphone positioned close to your mouth. This creates a large difference between your voice level and ambient noise, giving the gate a clear threshold to work with.

Tips for Clean Audio

Beyond the noise gate, you can improve your PTT audio quality:

  • Use a headset — Keeps the mic close to your mouth and away from ambient noise
  • Face away from noise sources — Point the microphone away from generators, speakers, etc.
  • Cup the mic — In very noisy environments, cup your hand around the device mic to create a wind shield
  • Speak at consistent volume — The gate works best when your voice level is predictable

Frequently Asked Questions

A noise gate mutes audio below a certain volume threshold — it lets voice through and blocks quiet ambient noise. Noise cancellation actively removes specific noise patterns from the audio signal. CrewTalk uses a noise gate approach.
The noise gate uses automatic threshold detection based on ambient noise levels. Manual sensitivity adjustment is planned for a future update.
