How It Will Work
VOX mode continuously monitors your microphone input level:
- Silence — Audio level stays below the VOX threshold; you're in listen mode
- Speech detected — Audio level exceeds the threshold; transmission begins automatically
- Pause — When you stop speaking, a configurable hold time keeps the transmission active briefly (preventing cutoffs during natural speech pauses)
- Release — After the hold time expires, transmission ends and you return to listen mode
Planned Features
- Adjustable sensitivity — Set the threshold that triggers transmission (adapts to different noise environments)
- Hold time — Configurable delay before transmission ends (prevents cutting off mid-sentence)
- Visual indicator — Clear on-screen feedback showing when VOX is active
- Quick override — Manual PTT button still works alongside VOX (press-to-mute or press-to-talk)
Use Cases
VOX mode will be particularly useful for:
- Camera operators whose hands are on the camera controls
- Grip/electric crew members handling equipment
- Anyone wearing gloves who can't easily press a touchscreen
- Hands-busy situations where reaching for a PTT button isn't practical
📝 Note
VOX mode will work alongside the existing noise gate feature. The noise gate prevents ambient noise from triggering false VOX activations, while VOX handles the automatic PTT triggering.
Current Alternatives
While VOX mode is in development, you can achieve hands-free PTT using:
- Bluetooth PTT — Use a headset's media button in toggle mode
- Wear OS — Use your smartwatch as a remote PTT button
- Both options provide hands-free operation today
